Chewie wasn’t just a goat I volunteered with. He was part of my life and routine. He was a real friend. I met Chewie in 2021 when I started volunteering at Saints after Twinkie passed and my world came crashing down. I needed to be part of something bigger than my grief. Chewie and I didn’t really bond until after Mabel and Chewy passed away. I think grief changed him. He became softer, more loving and curious. He started letting me brush him and pet him and even kiss his sweet little goat cheeks. For the last five years, Chewie was one of my best friends. I would drive to Saints in the morning with my heart fluttering, excited to see him. And he was always just as excited to see me, running up with that goofy joy, ready for cookies. That feeling when someone you love runs to greet you like that is hard to put into words. Yesterday was my first shift back at Saints since Gracie got sick. I had been away for a few months while she recovered, and I arrived early because I was so excited to be back. When I got there, Chewie was going into renal failure. The heartbreaking decision was made to let him go. I held him as he passed. I am so grateful I was able to be there with him in those moments. And I’m so glad he knows I came back and was there with him. And I am so grateful for Saints, and the strong, committed staff. Animals there are given such dignity and compassion at the end of their lives. It was peaceful. He was surrounded by people who loved him. Yes, loss is “part of the job” when working at a senior and special needs sanctuary. But losing your friends always hurts. It doesn’t get easier. You just learn to value time more each time. Love is the ultimate law. Time is the ultimate currency. #animalrescue #grief #goatsofinstagram
